the moon is the largest object in the solar system relative to a parent planet; earth. it is the fifth largest satellite in the solar system, with it's width comparable to the size of australia. tidal acceleration is causing the moon to move further and further away from the earth and this gradually slows down earth's rotation, lengthening our average day. due to libration, we can see up to 59% of the moon's surface. the moon was once volcanically active and is the second densest satellite in the solar system.
